From the University of Cincinnati DAAP Library: Rudolf (Rudy) August Hermes, (1927-2016), was a descendent of a Cincinnati family of German craftsmens and stone masons. Following two years in the Navy during WW II, he studied architecture at the University of Cincinnati. There he met his future wife Carole Bruner, who studied interior design. Rudy and Carole collaborated as a design team on numerous projects. Rudy’s practice and their joint projects focused on residental architecture and interiors. In addition to designing indvidual houses, Rudy also acted as a designer and developer of entire suburban streets and subdivisions, playng a role in what is known today as “design-build.” Cincinnati presented a rather conservative market for Modernism, but Rudy exhibited extraordinary imagination in a series of fantasy houses designed in 1959 for publication in “Ford Times” magazine. For these, Rudy collaborated with Charley Harper, who painted landscape backgrounds representing famous national parks and monuments, into which Rudy inserted futuristic houses, visited by their occupants in new Ford cars. In the late 1960s – 1970s, Rudy experimented with the sculptural Modernsim of such architects as Eero Saarinen; a design example is the small, pre-cast concrete and marble branch bank he designed as a part of an exciting proposal for adaptive use of the adjacent, historic Burger Brewery buildings.
